VA Scope: Environmental Consultation

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires that nuclear generating stations test their siren alert programs annually, according to very stringent and technical criteria. In October 2006, Veneklasen Associates conducted a full-scale field test of their 52 public alert sirens within a 10-mile radius consisting of Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente. This test represents the 10th consecutive year our firm has directed this complex effort, and the 26th consecutive year for Managing Principal Bob Robey. We were pleased to learn that our procedures and specifications have become FEMA's standard nationwide.

SCE relies on Veneklasen Associates to: establish siren specifications, test procedures and training standards for acoustic testing to meet FEMA guidelines - which includes the Q.C.Q.A. Testing Program for siren testing; extrapolate data into computer topographical models and contour maps depicting the actual siren coverage area, and produce a comprehensive final report to that will ensure their re-certification by FEMA and the NRC.
