The 34 airlines that use the Tom Bradley International Terminal served nearly 10 million international travelers in 2005. To relieve overcrowding for international travelers and accommodate new security requirements, LAX is undertaking a massive interior renovation of their existing 1,000,000 square-foot international terminal. The terminal's infrastructure will be completely updated, as well as the departure lobby and concourses, arrival concourses, lounges, and baggage claim. Once complete, a total of seven levels will have been renovated and expanded.
In addition to the acoustical design throughout, Veneklasen Associates developed the terminal paging system. The 70' high ceilings in the ticketing terminal made the system design particularly challenging, as did a request that no acoustical treatments be applied in order that the terminal's interior space remain as designed. The resulting series of 17' speakers placed strategically throughout the concourse ensures intelligibility and was acceptable to all.
